2013

A comprehensive infection prevention study, known as REDUCE MRSA, is published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study is conducted exclusively at 43 HCA Healthcare hospitals in conjunction with investigators at several institutions, including Harvard, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The study finds that using antimicrobial soap and ointment to decolonize all intensive care unit (ICU) patients reduces all bloodstream infections, including MRSA, by 44%.

2019

HCA Healthcare announces the development of an algorithm-driven, real-time system that more quickly identifies patients with sepsis. The technology, called SPOT (Sepsis Prediction and Optimization of Therapy), is estimated to save 8,000 lives from 2014-2019.

2020

HCA Healthcare treats over 122,000 COVID-19 inpatients, more than any other health system in the United States.

2021

HCA Healthcare and Google Cloud announce a multi-year partnership designed to provide actionable insights to help improve care and accelerate digital transformation. We continue to build on this partnership, announcing in 2023 work to use generative AI technology to improve workflows on time-consuming tasks like clinical documentation so physicians and nurses can focus more on patient care.

2024

The journal NEJM Evidence reports that a clinical trial by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, HCA Healthcare, UCI Health and the CDC identified a strategy to rapidly detect and respond to hospital outbreaks using algorithm-driven technology. An automated outbreak detection tool reduced the size of outbreaks by 64% during the trial period.
